Every new client asks the same question: where do I even start? The answer is rarely a dramatic overhaul. In our practice, the clients who succeed are the ones who stack small, steady changes — one habit at a time — until healthy eating feels automatic.
Here are the ten steps we recommend first, in order. Master one before adding the next, and give each at least a week.
Start with addition, not subtraction
1. Add one vegetable to lunch. Before removing anything, crowd your plate with color. A handful of greens or roasted peppers at lunch is an easy win.
2. Drink water before coffee. A large glass of water first thing supports energy and digestion far better than a second espresso.
3. Anchor each meal with protein. Eggs, fish, beans, yogurt, or poultry at every meal keeps you full and protects muscle.
Build the environment
4. Keep fruit visible. A bowl of apples or berries on the counter beats snacks hidden in the pantry every time.
5. Plan three dinners, not seven. Planning every night is overwhelming. Start with three repeatable, healthy dinners you enjoy.
6. Shop with a list. Our meal planning clients waste less and eat better simply because the list decides before hunger does.
Make it stick
7. Eat without screens twice a week. Mindful meals improve fullness cues and satisfaction — try it for dinner on weekdays.
8. Prep one staple on Sunday. A pot of grains, a tray of roasted vegetables, or hard-boiled eggs removes friction all week.
9. Keep a two-line food journal. Note what you ate and how you felt. Patterns appear within days.
10. Celebrate consistency, not perfection. One off-plan meal changes nothing. The habit that matters is the next healthy choice.
"Motivation starts the journey, but systems keep you on it. Build the system first."
